Apple Inc (AAPL.O) Chief Executive Tim Cook is joining the roster of the very rich who are giving away their wealth.

Fortune magazine cited the head of the world's largest technology corporation as saying he planned to donate his estimated $785 million fortune to charity - after paying for his 10-year-old nephew's college education.

"You want to be the pebble in the pond that creates the ripples for change," Cook told the magazine.

Fortune estimated Cook's net worth, based on his holdings of Apple stock, at about $120 million. He also holds restricted stock worth $665 million if it were to be fully vested.

The 54-year-old CEO's revelation in Fortune's lengthy profile of him is an example of the increasingly public philanthropy of the world's richest people.

Billionaire financier Warren Buffett is encouraging the very wealthy to give away at least half their worth in their lifetimes through the "Giving Pledge," whose website lists such luminaries as Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook Inc (FB.O) and Oracle Corp's (ORCL.N) Larry Ellison.

While Cook's largesse could not begin to approach the scale of a Gates or Zuckerberg, both worth billions of dollars, the Apple CEO told Fortune he hopes to make a difference.

Cook, who is not listed on the website, is known as an intensely private person who shuns the spotlight on philanthropy.

In recent years, however, he has begun speaking out more openly about issues ranging from the environment to civil rights. Cook, who recently revealed he was gay, spoke out against discrimination of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual communities during his induction into the Alabama Academy of Honor last year.

He told Fortune he has started donating money to unspecified causes quietly and is trying to develop a more "systematic approach" to philanthropy that goes beyond writing checks.

BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Wang Huning said Saturday the CPC is willing to strengthen experience-sharing with political parties of other countries on party-building.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and member of the CPC Central Committee Secretariat, made the remarks when meeting with foreign political party leaders attending the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-Level Meeting in Beijing.

In his keynote speech at the opening ceremony Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, called on political parties of the world to play a guiding role in building a community with a shared future for mankind and creating a better world.

To take on this mission, political parties of the world should step up capacity building, said Wang.

He said under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Xi at the core, the CPC has given top priority to party-building and exercised comprehensive strict governance of the Party.

The CPC has made remarkable progress in strengthening the authority and the centralized leadership of the CPC Central Committee, and comprehensively improving its capability of governance, Wang said, adding the CPC is ready to step up experience exchanges with global political parties.

Leaders of foreign political parties spoke highly of Xi's keynote speech. They said the meeting is an unprecedented great initiative in the history of political parties and voiced willingness of working with the CPC to promote the institutionalization of the meeting.

LISBON, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Social dialogue and collective negotiation are essential to guarantee labor rights, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said on Wednesday.

Addressing a conference to mark 100 years since the creation of the first ministry for work in Portugal, Costa said the Portuguese government was committed to supporting decent work as supported by the International Labour Organization.

"The idea presented so many times that Portugal continued to have a labor market that was too rigid and that the rise of productivity had to necessarily involve labor flexibility are facts we were able to deny on the basis of international comparative studies carried out by these organizations," he said.

"Austerity measures and insisting on a competitive model based on labor deregulation and low salaries had a negative impact on work and on the economy," Costa added.

He pointed out that the unemployment level hit 17.5 percent in 2013, taking away over 200,000 jobs. This led the government to abandon "the project of poverty" which the country was subject to, and to focus on a strategy "to dignify work," he said.

Costa said the government had held meetings with experts, institutions and social partners to establish priorities to establish mechanisms to modernize and transition to the new paradigms of the digital revolution.

The Socialist government, led by Antonio Costa and backed by the Left Bloc and Communist Party, has a budget for 2017 which centers on recovery of personal income while raising indirect taxes.

Costa has insisted his anti-austerity approach is boosting the economy. However, economic forecasts were recently revised in the country's state budget for 2017, expecting a larger deficit and lower growth compared to its forecast in A.
